History
In Nov.1947 with great foresight and sagacity, Prof. Zhuke Zhen, as the presdent of Zhejiang University (1936-1949), purchased the local residential houses as hospital buildings, with an area of about 2770 square meters and established the Affiliated Hospital of Medical College. He had an ambitious to develop the young hospital to a national renowned health care center.The first President of the hospital, Prof. Wang Jiwu, lead by example, followed the sprit to seeking truth from facts, scientificly managed th hospital and promoted loving academic atmosphere. Gradually, "Discipline and Practicality" was matured as essence of hospitals culture and heritage. This had a Far-reaching impact on the future hospital development. 60 years before, the hospital was only a "alley Hospital" with poor facilities, 66 staff, 65 beds; 60 years later, with great efforts, the hospital has ranked at the national top list, and made indelible contributions to the national health development for China.
Hospital of today
The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Zhejiang Provincial First Hospital) is a Class C, Grade One hospital, which serves as the center for medical care, teaching, research in Zhejiang Province. It was established on November 1st, 1947 with more than 3,780 employee, including more than 400 medical and nursing specialists with senior professional titles, 2 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 Chair Professors of the Yangtze River, 2 Yangtze River Professors, 2 Quiche Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. It covers an area of 150 acres, divided into Qingchun Hospital District, City Hospital District and University Avenue District, with 2500 approved beds.In 2009, there were 2,560,000 outdoor patients and 71,000 discharged patients, among them, 34,000 received operationy. The gross hospital revenue is 2.17 billion Yuan per year.

Outstanding subjects
The hospital attaches great importance to discipline construction and personnel training, improving health care quality with science and technology and promoting sustainable development of hospital. In our hospital there are 2 national key disciplines [internal medicine (infectious disease), surgery (general surgery)], 4 key disciplines of Zhejiang Province, (internal medicine, surgery, oncology, oral clinical medicine), a group of key medical disciplines of Zhejiang Province (transplantation), 17 key medical disciplines of Zhejiang Province, and 18 key disciplines of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Zhejiang Province.
The Department of Infectious Diseases is distinguished for clinical and laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases, applications of antibiotics and diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis. Lan-juan Li, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, established a novel type of hybrid bioartificial liver support system integrated the non-biological and biological artificial liver system, which significantly has improved the outcome for treatment of severe hepatitis. The improvement rate of acute and subacute severe hepatitis increased from 11.9% to 78.9%, and that of chronic severe hepatitis cure from 15.4% to 43.4%. Many patients treated by the artificial liver support system are not only escaping the shadow of death, but also return to work. The longest survival duration is over 20 years.
The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery leads the country in comprehensive treatment of liver cancer, bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer, acute hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis, and the Liver Transplant Center is one of the largest organ transplant center in China. Professor Shu-sen Zheng, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, has completed more than 900 cases of liver transplantation as the chief surgeon, including the youngest case of living donor liver transplantation for the child in China, the first case of adult expanded right living liver donor liver transplantation and liver transplantation for the elderly patients. Recently, the one year survival rate has reached 95.2% for benign end-stage liver disease, which reaches the international advanced level. The survival and life quality of recepients receiving combined liver and kidney transplantation keeps the national record; one case of the combined pancreas-kidney transplant has survived 16 years till now, which creates and maintains the longest record in Asia.
The Department of Hematology leads the country in treating various types of leukemia with comprehensive therapies. In addition, it is also well known for the diagnosis and treatment of the malignant histiocytosis, myelodysplastic syndrome and other hematologic malignancies and thrombocytopenic purpura, various types of anemia. In the bone marrow transplant center, the technology of non-related allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is currently at the national leader level, with the largest number of clinical cases. The technology of kidney transplantation in the kidney transplantation center is at the international advanced level. It is the first department to integrate internal medicine and surgery, TCM and western medicine, early diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease, delayed renal failure, renal replacement and integration of treatment of kidney transplant. The application of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy in treatment of severe critical care patients is at the national leading level. Moreover, the Department of Cardiology leads the province in introducing interventional diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases, and then leads the country in treating cardiac arrhythmia with radiofrequency ablation. The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgical department is specialized in heart valve replacement, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, which enjoys a national reputation for the high success rate in performing open-heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. In recent years, the department has adopted various minimally invasive surgeries and succeeded in heart transplantation and simultaneous heart and lung transplantation. The Department of Urology has distinguished itself in diagnosing and treating urinary tumors and conducting clinical andrology research as well as treating urinary calculi with extracorporeal lithotripsy. The Department of Gastroenterology wins a high reputation for treating digestive diseases with endoscope as well as diagnosing and treating early gastric cancer, peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal dysfunction. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has profound knowledge in refractory pulmonary infection after transplantation, acute respiratory distress syndrome, early diagnosis of lung cancer, the cause of pleural effusion diagnosis of MDR-TB, refractory asthma. It firstly carried out the bronchoscope in the Zhejiang Province. The Department of Anorectic Surgery is well known for surgery in colorectal surgery, colostomy, and treatment of the internal and external hemorrhoidsy. Minimally Invasive Surgery Center has distinguished itself in application Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Zhejiang province.
Research at the hospital is quite successful, and the hospital as the chief scientist institute chaired the 3 national 973 Projects (a national key development project for basic research), the national 863 project (a national development project for high and new technology research), national research projects, major international cooperation project, the National Natural Science Fund, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health research projects of major projects. So far, the hospital has won five National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 16 Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. The number of SCI accepted papers has increased year by year. The hospital has ranked among the top ten hospitals of China in the terms of the quantity of published research papers for six consecutive years. The total research funds of hospital reached 103 million in 2009. As the first affiliated hospital with the annual research funding more than 100 million yuan, the hospital won the “Special Contribution Award for Scientific Research of Zhejiang University”, in 2009.
